The JV
team (combined Blue and White) beat Austin 20-17 in a great come-from-behind
victory!
-
The Clements
JV team pulled off a thrilling come from behind victory at Austin High School Thursday night. Down
17-6 with just under 2 minutes to go, exactly how much time was remaining
will never be known because Austin’s scoreboard was not working, the
Bulldogs lined up to punt at their own 25 yard line but the snap sailed over
the punter’s head and into the endzone. The punter ran back to scoop it up
and in a state of panic threw the ball up in the air where it was picked off
by Ike Nwachukwu who then raced 5 yards into the endzone to make the score
17-12. A successful 2 point conversion attempt on a run by Jacob Khalil
made the score 17-14. Clements DE/kickoff specialist Taylor Ashford then
executed a perfect onside kick which was recovered by Taylor Rogers leaving
the Rangers 55 yards away from the go-ahead score. After Jacob Khalil
picked up 3 yards on the opening play of the drive, Mike Seitz threw a 40
yard strike to Eric Nguyen on a playaction pass thanks to great protection
from the O-line and an excellent blitz pickup by tailback Daniel Jeffrey.
Daniel Jeffrey then took it in from 10 yards out to give the Rangers a
20-17 lead. After Umair Karowadia did an excellent job staying disciplined
and defending against a reverse, Andrew Akunna slammed the
Austin quarterback down with authority for a 5
yard sack on an Austin sprintout attempt. Then Austin attempted a double
pass which was intercepted by Kevin Moran and returned 20 yards to end the
scoring threat and seal the game. Special recognition extended to the
offensive line of Terry Gallagher, Ryker Elkins, BJ Jordan, Connor Hervieux,
Justin Tate, Ryan Alexander, and Grant Weber who in addition to being a
dominant run blocker, amazingly caught his first career pass for a big gain
and 1st down. The defense turned in a scrappy performance and
got the big stops when we needed them. It was an amazing finish and a great
testament to a team that plays all the way until the final whistle. The
Rangers will look to carry this momentum and excitement forward into
practice next week as the blue team prepares for Willowridge and the white
team readies for a battle with Terry High School.
